Steps

  1. Open the other person's profile, for example by tapping their name on a video.
  2. Tap Message. If you two have messaged before, the same conversation opens.
  3. Type in the field at the bottom and tap the arrow button to send. The button stays dimmed until you have typed something.
  4. To find a conversation later, open the Feed tab (the house icon) and tap the speech-bubble icon at the top right. The Messages list opens. Tap a conversation to read it.

Good to know

  • Messages are text only. Sending a photo or a video, and group conversations, aren't available yet.
  • Your messages appear on the right in teal. The other person's messages appear on the left.
  • A number on the speech-bubble icon is your count of unread messages. It shows 99+ when you have more than 99. In the Messages list, a conversation with unread messages shows a bold name and a count. Opening the conversation marks it as read.
  • You cannot see whether the other person has read your message, and there is no typing indicator.
  • Pamojah stores your messages on its servers. They are not end-to-end encrypted.
  • Deleting a message or a conversation isn't available yet. If you delete your account, your messages are removed as part of that. See Deleting your account.
  • If either of you blocks the other, the conversation disappears from both Messages lists. Neither of you can send. Tapping Message on their profile then shows "You can't message this user." See Reporting, blocking and muting.
  • If the other person pauses their account or asks to delete it, the conversation stays in your list as "Account unavailable". You can still read it, but you cannot send messages. Their name comes back if they return to Pamojah. If their account is erased, their messages read "Message removed".
  • A new message can arrive as a push notification with the sender's name and the start of the message. Turn these off in Settings > Notifications > Notification Preferences > Messages. Tapping the notification opens your Activity list, not the conversation. See Notification settings.
  • Sending a post to a friend inside Pamojah isn't available yet. See Sharing a post outside Pamojah.
  • Messages are between people. A page does not have a Message button.
  • If the other person has the blue FR mark, it shows next to their name in Messages. See What the blue FR mark means.
